Literature

This course will use several online or downloadable articles as literature. These are provided in the schedule on this page. Some articles are mandatory for the exam, this is indicated in the schedule.

Additionally, there are several books which coarsely contain the content of this course.
These books are optional for the course.

  • The Art of Game Design: A Book of Lenses, Second Edition.
    Jesse Schell, 2014, ISBN: 978-1466598645.
    This book introduces many aspects of game design, such as the role of the game designer, the process of game development, player behavior, and of course the design of games. The book respects the creative aspects of game development and only rarely forces the reader in a certain direction.
  • Understanding Video Games: The Essential Introduction, Second Edition.
    Jonas Heide Smith, Simon Egenfeldt-Nielsen and Susana Pajares Tosca, 2012, ISBN: 978-0415896979.
    This book does not focus on the question how to make games, but looks at game design from the outside. This view is related to the game studies research field.
